Building with Earth

It is said that around one third of the Earth’s population lives in an earthen building. In East Anglia there are thousands of earth buildings mainly from the 19th-century which need to be properly maintained and, in some cases, modernised. New earth construction can address the environmental crisis we are currently facing in ways unmatched by any other building material or construction process.

Built of Earth specialises in the design, repair, renovation and conversion of new and existing earth buildings including: cob, clay lump, Adobe, rammed earth and wattle and daub. Over the years, Built of Earth and its parent company WCK Design and Conservation Ltd. have been involved in scores of existing earth buildings together with new earth extensions, and other low carbon, sustainable designs. These have included new housing, domestic extensions, barn conversions, loft conversions, village halls and churches. We have won both architectural and environmental design awards and have collaborated with home owners, builders and architectural practices to provide a range of design services.

Earth building can take many forms: traditional clay lump, modern earth blocks, rammed earth, cob, wattle and daub and numerous hybrid forms.
