Services for New Earth Buildings and Extensions

Earth, the only truly sustainable walling material.

Green buildings, achieving the highest energy standards and Building Regulations compliance.

Imagine a building material obtained at little or no cost, one that is entirely recyclable, has extremely low embodied carbon, is not imported, does not deplete scarce resources, has high resistance to sound transmission, good fire resistance, helps to regulate humidity, provides generous amounts of thermal mass, creates zero waste, contains no VOCs, has a life of hundreds of years and is affordable!

The architectural potential of earth building is virtually unlimited and as our climate warms we will need heavyweight materials offering generous amounts of thermal mass to help regulate internal temperatures during the much hotter summers we must now expect. In the winter, external insulation holds the heat in, allowing the mass of the walls to act as storage radiators maintaining a more even temperature day and night.

Research at the University of Plymouth has demonstrated that earth block walling can reduce the embodied carbon of the external walls of a two-storey dwelling by up to 70% compared to a standard cavity wall.

The building industry is a major contributor to pollution. Approximately 10% of total energy consumption arises from the manufacture and transportation of building materials. Furthermore, material production and construction accounts for an estimated 122 million tonnes of waste or 30% of the total waste arising in the United Kingdom.

Built of Earth can offer the ultimate sustainable home both in terms of its operational costs and emissions and, with the adoption of earth walls, the embodied carbon can also be reduced to as near zero as is practically possible.
